New Skyway in Leland NC
October 23rd, 2009 4:27 PM

The Brunswick County Commissioners are poised to put their support behind the Cape Fear Skyway, including protecting a corridor from development as planning for the road continues.

State law allows municipalities to file “transportation official corridor maps,” preventing building on a road’s planned path for three years. We’re in agreement with the idea and concept, but only if they use the northern route.

It would pass primarily through undeveloped parts of Brunswick County, largely avoiding major developments and missing the existing neighborhoods of Snee Farm and Stoney Creek altogether.Brunswick County’s support would appear to be a boon to Skyway advocates and transportation planners, who have stressed for months the need to preserve a future corridor from development, particularly in Brunswick County.

Development pressures are mounting on both sides of the river, making it essential that a corridor is preserved soon.

Representatives from the N.C. Turnpike Authority, the arm of the N.C. Department of Transportation planning the Skyway, came to Wilmington earlier this month to stress the importance of protecting a corridor to the region’s Transportation Advisory Committee, a group of elected officials which sets priorities for road projects.
